SOFT X-RAY MICROCHARACTERIZATION BEAMLINE

SXRMB Beamline

The Soft X-Ray Microcharacterization Beamline (SXRMB) is a medium energy X-ray beamline with a range of 1.7 to 10 keV. This unique energy range supports, but is not limited to, research from biological, environmental, and chemical sciences. SXRMB houses four endstations which are available to the user community, each providing a unique configuration for a variety of experiments. Available techniques at SXRMB include X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging via microprobe, and X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL).

Solid State Endstation

  Available

Bulk analysis of solid samples, such as pellets and powders can be performed using this endstation. Samples are placed under vacuum of 10-7 torr, optimizing flux for lower energy edges such as silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur. This endstation is equipped with fluorescence and total electron yield (TEY) detection.

Microprobe Endstation

  Available

This endstation provides a 10 × 10 μm beamspot for use in mapping experiments. Micro-XAS can also be performed on specific spots using the microprobe.

Ambient Table

  Available

This multi use endstation is designed for bulk analysis of many different samples. The endstation can be configured for liquid and solid in-situ experiments as well.

High Energy X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

  Available

By setting the beamline to varying energies, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) can be performed at different depths on the same sample, providing information on surface and bulk properties of the material.

Cycle 39 will last from January 2024 to December 2024 and include a shutdown period for LINAC upgrades.
